Noise Level and Relation to Distance and Formula to Calculate


OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulate the noise level, in relation to duration of exposure to human mental health and hearing problem, based on OSHA 85dBA is the limit for exposure 8hours. The dBA might increase or decrease if duration is change and vice versa. I believe that noise able to control your mind, it changes mood and able to flip a switch on our head (normal or crazy mode haha).

During my beginning of working in oil and gas 2010-ish, I vaguely remember that the limit was 90dBA, then later getting lower till nowadays is 85dBA at 1meter distance. This number become the acceptance criteria of all rotating equipment in design.

Sound simple talk about noise, if there is noise just go away from it, yes, it is. However, in plant, especially platform, you will not have the luxury to make distance to the noise source. Consequently, no other way, rotating equipment shall be design in such a way, to limit the noise to 85dBA.

Let try to scale what is 85dBA

SCALING


Below graphic, just give a general definition, but still lack of distance in the data. In fact, distance is very important when talking about noise. In my understanding below graphic shown with logical distance following the sample, such as whisper, is less than 30cm from your ears. City traffic and truck we may assume it is 1-2m from our ear to the noise source. While jet engine is let say 1km from where you are, you are never hear full power jet engine 1m from you, your ear will bleed.

Basically, the noise that we talk about is the sound pressure level, which is conversion from Sound Pressure Pa into dB, which easier to understand.

Then there is sound power level term, which does not affect by distance. Sound power definition is sound energy transferred per second from the noise source to the air

DISTANCE


Distance gives lot of effect to noise, to demonstrate please refer to below graph

As per above graph, by distancing our self 1 meter away from 90dBA(1 meter from sound source) noise, we able to reduce to 83dBA (-7dBA) then when we distance 3 meter away from 90dBA, we reduce further by 12dBA.

There should be mathematical form to estimate sound reduction in relation to distance to one sound source.

Let's give it a try if r1=1m, r2=2m, the log(0.5) = 0.3, times 20 = 6, so in line with above graphic stating that every 1 meter we lost 6-7dBA, ok, this formula we able to use. try once more, if the new distance 4, means log (0.25) = 0.6, times 20 = 12. It is exactly reflecting the graphic.

DIESEL ENGINE CASE


The ultimatum for diesel engine is to limit it sound to 85dBA, oh nooo, impossible, the power is reflected by the noise that it makes. Even, in stationer speed of diesel engine it may reach >85dBA, and during peak power run it able to reach 120-150dBA. Just get away bro.

Then it comes to sound proofing, the diesel engine must be located inside enclosure that able to absorb the noise the diesel engine producing. There is detail about each material that able to absorb noise.

The same also happened in GAS TURBINE, or any high-speed machinery. That is why it end-up to be put inside enclosure. However, it is not always the single reason, diesel engine also considered as source of safety risk in hazardous area, that is why sometimes the enclosure also act as buffer zone to expelled flammable gas move around the hot surface of the engine, using pressurize fan on the enclosure ventilation system.


TESTING


This is very interesting, how to test the noise, it is very challenging to have 0dBA environment condition, there are place that made that able to reach 0dBA, but it is troublesome for equipment manufacturer to move the complete equipment to the place, so the rational thing that we able to do, is to measure the ambient environment noise in dBA before the engine/equipment start in the location that we will measure the noise.

So let take to real case, in Factory acceptance test, we measure ambient noise without engine running is 89dBA, then when engine running, we measure in the same place 90dBA. What will be the engine sound level?

using the above formula we already knew the Lt = 90, the L1= 89, L2 = engine sound

the L2 = 83.5dBA, the formula is quite hard to simplify, so the easiest way is to keep trying L2 until the Lt ~ 90, with help of excel, it will be fast, as shown below

We able to verify that our engine sound is 83.5dBA

What if the ambient noise is 88, easy, if during run you got 90dBA, means your engine producing 85.7dBA

It is interesting the 1 point different of ambient dBA resulting far different engine noise level. Thanks to logarithmic scale.

Another case, if ambient exactly 85dBA, and during running measured noise value is 88dBA, means your engine producing 85dBA so still acceptable.

However, if your ambient is lower than <85dBA, while the measurement resulting above 85dBA

Finally, above formula able to justify the thousand-dollar question, whether the equipment noise level is within acceptance criteria? or additional scope of sound proofing shall be added. The question is never multiple-choice answer, multi department will be involved do find solution if the noise value measured beyond the acceptance criteria.

However, please remember by default engineer shall always be right (engineer will be scolded and punished if made mistake but not vice versa), then let the management take the credit on how much potential saving that been done, with sometimes even a simple thanks are forgotten to be said to engineer.

Marc Marquez injury akibat crash di FrenchGP, sebenarnya ini bisa di hindari, tapi mungkin karena reflek Marc yang sering magically saves crash, tapi untuk kali ini, keberuntungan tidak berpihak, saat kecepatan motor 103km/jam, loss front masuk tikungan ke kanan.

Kaki kanan bagian 5th metatarsal, bagian yang menghubungkan tulang kaki utama ke jari2 kaki patah dan harus di operasi, ini yang mengakibatkan Marc harus absen di main race FrenchGP.

Catatan waktu Marc juga kurang stabil, mungkin karena fight dengan beberapa pembalap, bandingkan dengan Joan Mir yang bisa dapat best section 3 of 4 di lap 3, sedangkan marc hanya pernah 1 kali di lap 4, best section 2 of 4, dan saat best time nya hanya best di section 1.

Expected corrosion rate is provided by pump manufacturer, to define acceptance criteria, it refer to; how much safety factor or extra diameter given on the pump shaft itself.

Pernah ada fasa memikirkan apa guna nya hidup di umur kepala 2x, kalau dulu s.d masa kuliah masih no clue, ya banyak impian apalagi hasil tontonan film 90an s.d 2000, hidup menarik sekali, jadi superhero, jadi kaya, bisa beli mainan apa saja. Banyak kegiatan menantang yg bisa di coba, tiap hari bangun punya drive baru untuk dilakukan, punya target baru yg harus dikejar.

Semakin tua banyak impian yg bisa, tidak bisa dan ada yg mustahil dicapai, apalagi dari kecil terbiasa result driven, kalau nda dapat apa2 buat apa berusaha. Sulit sekali nanti hanya utk sekedar bangun tidur hari itu saja sudah tidak ada drive apa2 lagi.

Tulisan kali ini membahas secara brief moda transportasi menggunakan bus express direct dari Ulsan ke Incheon Airport.

Schedule flight jam 00.20 29-Maret-2025, karena baru pertama kali jadi safety margin di set sangat lebar, yaitu dengan membeli tiket bus Jam 14.30 tgl 28Mar25 seharaga won 49.100,- di cek menggunakan naver maps waktu perjalanan harusnya 5jam 30an menit.

Jika kita stay di akomodasi area Dong-Gu Ulsan (Ulsan sisi selatan timur) maka untuk mencapai Ulsan Intercity Bus Station lebih dekat, dengan biaya taxi 17.000,- an won. sekitar 10 km. Saya bergerak dari lokasi akomodasi saya jam 13.30. Tidak buru2 20-30menit sampai di Ulsan Intercity Bus Station(Lotteria Ulsan)

Saya record touch down di Inchen Airport ternyata di Jam 20.33 jadi sekitar 6 jam real perjalanan, ada beberapa kepadatan lalu lintas di jalan tol dekat seoul.

Kelebihan lain menggunakan bus dari ulsan adalah tidak perlu banyak pindah moda, cukup naik bus dan duduk manis, langsung sampai di pintu terminal Aipror International Incheon, selain itu juga lebih murah dari menggunakan KTX Bullet Train.

Bus nya sendiri sangat nyaman dengan konfigurasi tempat duduk 2 - 1 kapasitas 30orang.
Tempat duduk juga recline dengan support untuk kaki, kursi juga lebar dan nyaman. Merk bus tentunga buatan Korea Selatan.

Ini agak saru kalo dibilangin, nanti dibilang julid atau apa. Padahal kenyataan di lapangan ini benar-benar terjadi, ada persaingan antar saudara, antar ibu pamer anak-anak nya.

Paling miris sampai memaksakan diri melalui nyicil (riba) saat memiliki kendaraan, beberapa barang yg bisa digunakan untuk bisa diliat kalau sukses biasanya mobil dan ada tingkatannya, misal beli mobil 4x4 yang makin besar makin terlihat sukses. Ini juga terlihat ada beberapa mobil yg digunakan untuk show of force misal mobil fortuner atau pajero yg ukurannya besar. Berakhir berkendara secara arogan di jalan, merasa lebih berhak atas jalan dsb nya. Belum lagi mulai ada tesla yang sangat sangat buruk dari segi desain dan performa menurut saya, semua nya tidak make sense, desain nya yg belum proven tapi mampu membuat orang seperti FOMO (fear of missing out) kalau tidak memilikinya.

Selanjutnya ada lagi masalah handphone, salah satu brand yg sangat saya benci adalah iphone, entah bagaimana kepintaran brand yg mensupport genosida di Gaza ini bisa menempatkan diri sebagai ciri kesuksesan seseorang, harganya sudah tidak masuk akal dengan performa dibawah android dgn harga yg sama tapi fansboy nya sangat besar dan agresif. Mereka rela melabeli orang yg tidak menggunakan iphone sebagai "miskin" entah bagaimana.

Saya rasa orang-orang yg memaksakan diri utk memiliki barang-barang diatas ampai dengan melakukan riba ada masalah validasi atas diri, sulit mendefinisikan siapa dia tanpa menggunakan barang-barang tersebut, nauzubilah mindzalik. Semoga hamba yg jauh dari sempurna ini dilindungi Allah dari kelakuan buruk tersebut.

Suddenly ABS, handbrake indicator and beeeeepppp sound appear for no reason.

The brake pedal felt heavy and no feel of brake booster, the brake also irresponsive.
Succeed to bring back the car home, utilizing manual break pedal together with handbrake, drive slow and maintain safe distance.

Skip to this morning, after scanning google maps and land cruiser facebook group, with little confidence there is something wrong with the brake booster and ABS module, I drive the car to Industrial street 25 gate 24 ABWRQ garage, that claim that they are specialist of brake system and ABS

Note: magically when I drove the car to garage (17km), the problem suddenly gone and all work well, like nothing wrong, but still I bring to garage for check. This after inner talk with the car haha, said "calm down I bring you to garage to check, don't be upset" It is work haha.

Perpanjang Istimara Mobil Secara Mandiri di Qatar

Istimara atau semacam kepemilikan dan kartu kelayakan jalan mobil, di Qatar tidak ada BPKB dan STNK hanya kartu Istimara namanya. dan data tersimpan di server Ministry of Interior, karena terkait dgn pelanggaran tilang dsb nya. Setiap ada jual beli mobil hampir selalu secara instan balik nama terjadi hanya dgn menggunakan app methrash2.

Kebeulan si LC J200 Istimara berakhir di 30 Nov 2024. H-30 sudah bisa proses perpanjang.



Ada 2 syarat untuk mobil diatas 3tahun dari tahun produksi di app methrash2;
1. Perpanjang 3rd party insurance atau asuransi pihak ketiga yg menjamin org lain yg kita tabrak atau senggol, untuk asuransi mobil kita sendiri ini opsional.
2. Fahes check atau inspeksi kendaraan yg dilakukan di Fahes center.

ASURANSI 3RD PARTY
Untuk asuransi cukup cek di methrash2 pojok kanan atas profile kita, tap dan pilih vehicle, akan terlihat nama asuransi, nomor asuransi dan dokumen number.

langsung saja ke web asuransi tsb, untuk contoh saya Qatar insurance Company. langsung cek asuransi kita dan ikuti saja prosedur untuk perpanjang yg bisa dilakukan secara online, biaya saat ini adalah QR600 utk 3rd party insurance. Masa berlaku akan +12bulan dari masa aktif sebelumnya walaupun. dilakukan 1bulan sebelum.

FAHES
Inspeksi utk area doha ada 3 cabang lokasi Wadi Al banat, mesaiimer dan wakra.
Booking atau appointment bisa dilakukan menggunakan app Woqood.
biaya inspeksi untuk mobil QR150.

Fahes yg buka sampai jam 9 malam hanya Wadi Al banat utk saat ini.

Note: saya book jam 19.30, saya sampai terlalu early di jam 18.40, dari petugas disarankan menunggu sampai jam 19.00 saja baru masuk krn sistem hanya bisa 30menit lbh cepat.

saya liat juga mobil2 yg go-show juga banyak karena cukup cepat dan lancar utk keputusan pass atau fail nya.

APA YG DI CEK DI FAHES?
Step 1.
mobil masuk bay pengetesan, pengemudi diminta turun, roda diputar maksimum kekiri (sepertinya melihat fungsi kemudi dan kebocoran di power steering) emisi di cek. seluruh fungsi lampu, klakson, lampu sign.

Step 2.
Mobil maju perlahan ke area brake check
kedua roda depan masuk ke semacam roller dan petugas menginjak rem dgn kuat, monitor akan memperlihatkan kekuatan pengereman, hijau artinya pass. Dilakukan hal sama dgn kedua roda belakang.

Step 3.
Mobil maju lagi ke area akhir, roda depan di posisikan diatas plat yg akan menggoyangkan mobil, bukan hanya goyang tapi di hentak, petugas ada di basement bawah melihat kolong mobil dan sepertinya melakukan cek di integritas kaki2 san chassis.

Selesai.

Jika lolos akan update secara real time di methrash2, jika fail maka akan di beri to do list, sepertinya tes ulang (logikanya ya bayar lagi QR150)

Tahap akhir perpanjang istimara, tinggal ke bagian traffic, vehicle renewal, jika 2 syarat sudah tanda hijau, bisa bayar secara online istimara QR100 jika ambil sendiri kartu di traffic dept. atau +20QR jika mau diantar qatarpost kerumah.

lesson learned: untuk FAHES jika yakin mobil akan pass baiknya lakukan dekat-dekat mas berlaku habis, karena masa berlaku jadi dihitung dari hari dan tgl FAHES dilakukan.
